Description:
Streptomycin is an amino glycoside antibiotic isolated
from Streptomycin griseus. It has a particular activity
against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Composition: Each vial contains: Streptomycin
0.75g/1.0g
as Streptomycin Sulphate.
Indications: Streptomycin is indicated in
all form of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections,
in conjunction with other antituberculous agent when
the infecting organisms are susceptible to these drugs.
The common combined drug therapy is streptomycin,
isoniazid, and Para-amino-salicylic acid. Streptomycin
is considered therapeutically as a first-line or primary
antitubercular agent.
Non tuberculosis Infection: Streptomycin is
indicated in those serious non tuberculosis infection
caused by the bacterial organism shown to be sensitive
to it and less potentially hazardous therapeutic agents
are ineffective are contra-indicated. These are (a)
Pasteurella Pestis (plague), (b) Pasteurella tularensis
(tularemia), (c) Brucella, (d) dovonanosis (granuloma
inguinale), (e) H. dureyi (chancroid), (f) H. influenzae
(in respiratory, endocrinal and meningeal infections-concomitantly
with other antibiotics), (g) K.pneumoniae and strept.
Faecalis in urinary tract infections.
Contra Indications: A main disadvantage of
streptomycin therapy is the development of bacterial
resistance when used for a long period so used in
combination therapy. Disease of ear partic, otitis
media, labirynthine disturbances.
Special Precautions: Impaired liver or Kidneys
function, premature infants, possibility of resistance,
skin, Sensitization.
Paediatrics: Contra indicated.
Lactation& Pregnancy: Contra indicated.
Dosage: 1 gm in a day for 2-3 months or as
prescribed by the Physician.
Presentation: Box of 25 vials of Streptomycin.
