is semi-synthetic amino penicillin, antibiotic
with a Good spectrum of bactericidal activity
against many gram-positive and gram-negative
microorganisms. Ampicillin is stable in presence
of gastric acid and may be given without regard
to meals. It acts through inhibition of biosynthesis
of cell wall mucopeptide and bacterial cell
explodes due to internal pressure. Its oral
absorption is better and has higher and more
sustained blood levels. It has low incidences
of diarrhoea. It is active against shigella
and H.Influenza.It is also more active against
those microbes which are sensitive to Penicillin-G;
in addition many gram-negative bacilli like
E.Colli, proteus, Salmonella are inhibited.
Ampicillin appears in the bile, undergoes enterohepatic
circulation, and is excreted in appreciable
quantities in the feces.
