| Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which
is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative
organisms.
Composition: -
Each vial contains: Chloramphenicol Sodium Succinate
Equ. to Chloramphenicol: 1000mg
Indications: Treatment of brain abscess, Meningitis,
(Para)- Typhoid fever, Typhus infections, Q fever,
Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ocular infections, bacterial
blepharitis or conjunctivitis or keratitis.
Contraindication: -
Know history of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions
to Chloramphenicol risk- benefit should be considered
when bone marrow depression or hepatic functions impairment
exists.
Precautions: -
Chloramphenicol for systemic (non-ophthalmic) application
should be reserved for serious infections in which
less toxic antibacterial are ineffective or contraindicated
It should never be given in minor infections or for
prophylaxis. Repeated courses should be avoided.
Dosage and administration: -
Intramuscular or intravenous injection: -
12.5 mg per kg of body weight every six hours. The
usual adult prescribing limits are 4 g a day. In severe
infections, such as bacteraemia or meningitis doses
up to 75 or 100 mg per kg of body weight daily may
be used.
Infants up to 2 weeks of age receive 6.25 mg per kg
of body weight. Infants 2 weeks of age and over receive
12.5 mg per kg of body weight every six hours or 25
mg every twelve hours.
